These Friday 5s (from the last two Fridays) are a continuation of the last one I posted, themed around wrapping up the year.

1. What were your favorite TV series this year?
I barely watched any TV this year, but I did start season one of Formula 1: Drive to Survive and I'm hooked. My mom and I finally finished the previous season of The Great British Baking Show and I watched more Aggretsuko, but I still need to finish the last two seasons. I'm waiting for season two of Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and this year I want to finish Hospital Playlist and Kimi ni Todoke as well.

2. What were your favorite movies this year?
Hands down, Oddity was my top favorite movie of the year. It was so creepy and atmospheric, the performances were wonderful, and I was gripped the whole time. I'm in love with the oddities shop and the house that the majority of the film took place in. I didn't enjoy Longlegs as much as I thought I would, but it's probably still up there. Also loved Dune: Part Two and Wicked.

3. What was the most memorable meal you had this year?
The short rib & egg brunch at a local restaurant downtown. I went there with my mom and sister, and we also split an appetizer of three different kinds of toasts: avocado, nutella & banana, and strawberry & lemon ricotta. I have not stopped thinking about that meal since.

4. Who made you laugh most this year?
Danny, of course. He keeps me laughing.

5. When were you the farthest from home this year?
I didn't do a lot of traveling this year. The farthest we went was NYC, which is about 700 miles -- or a 2-hour flight -- away. We had the best time there for our honeymoon, though. I miss McSorley's.

6. What was especially good for your mental health this year?
Getting a puppy. Having a small being to focus on taking care of -- and to cuddle with -- has been life-changing in a good way. She got me through all the election nonsense, and she'll help me get through the next four years as well.

7. What was especially good for your physical health this year?
Having an exercise routine. I've been slacking on it this month because I got sick, but I plan to get back to working out for about an hour three days per week next month. I do Grow with Jo's videos because they're actually fun, and I don't usually find exercise fun.

8. What did you learn this year?
Needle felting!

9. As this year ends, what’s trending to make you optimistic about next year?
I'm not too sure what's trending. I was happy to see 2NE1 make a comeback and I'm optimistic for a new album. Does that count?

10. What’s better now than it was twelve months ago? My living situation. It's just Danny and me (and our puppy!) in a much better apartment in a much better area of town. I'm really happy here.

Friday 5:

1. What’s the best song you heard for the first time in 2024?
"Starburster" by Fontaines DC

2. How would you summarize 2024 in one song lyric?
Leaders speak from their hallowed halls
They promise freedom, they lie
Drums of war in the distance sound
We're marching on to our decline

- "Dystopia" by Simone Simons

3. Where did you hear the best live music of any kind, performed by musicians of any age or talent?
In Nashville, when I saw Lacuna Coil and Oceans of Slumber live

4. Whose music did you listen to most?
Epica

5. What was the most compelling music-related news or event of 2024?
I don't really listen to Chappell Roan, but keeping up with her criticism of fandom and parasocial behavior has been interesting, and I think it's important that she spoke out about it.
lethia: (Alice)
I'm always late to these, but here are last Friday's Fives.

Friday 5:

1. Among people who are professionally funny, who most reliably makes you laugh?
James Acaster, Suzy Eddie Izzard (who I was lucky enough to see live a few years ago), and Atsuko Okatsuka

2. Which films have made you laugh most?
Plains, Trains and Automobiles is probably the one movie that has made me laugh the hardest. What We Do in the Shadows and We're the Millers also come to mind.

3. Whose comedy leaves you flat?
I'm not a huge Bo Burnham fan, although I did love his movie Eighth Grade. I don't hate him, but his comedy has kind of a depressing edge to it that gets under my skin.

4. When did you most recently laugh aloud at something you read?
This False Knees comic, which is part of a larger series that he's been posting on Instagram and I've been loving.

5. What are some of your favorite novelty songs?
Anything by Flight of the Conchords and Brian David Gilbert. I'll also always have a nostalgic love for "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer."

The Friday Five:

1. What is your favorite childhood memory?
Playing soccer on a team, joint birthday parties with my best friend, every Halloween, watching Spice World over and over again, New Year's Eves spent staying up with Mom watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve, vacations at New Smyrna in the summers, playing in the woods at my cousins' house, Saturday morning cartoons with cereal... There are so many. I'm grateful that I had a good childhood.

2. If you could be reincarnated as anything besides human, who would you want to be?
A bird of prey

3. If you had to start your life all over, what are three things you would change?
I wouldn't be in a relationship at 15, I would accept the work study that was offered to me in high school, and I would devote myself to learning another language at an early age. That being said, I try not to dwell on regrets, especially because they all led to my current life, and I'm very happy now.

4. If you had to forget everything in your life, except one thing, what would it be?
This is a cruel question. I'll say Danny, but I don't want to forget anything.

5. Do you have a lucky charm?
I have a four-leaf clover keychain that I consider lucky. It will probably always be on my keyring. I've always had a strange love of four-leaf clovers. They feel magical to me.
lethia: (Alice)
Today's Friday 5:

In sociology, the third place refers to the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home (the first place) and the workplace (the second place). Examples of third places include churches, cafes, bars, clubs, libraries, gyms, bookstores, hackerspaces, stoops, parks, and theaters.

1. What is your usual third place these days?
I honestly don't get out enough these days. It would probably be the library because that's the third place I'm at the most. And maybe the nearby park, because I enjoy going for walks there, which is something I want to try to do more of.

2. How are your third place needs different today from some other time in your life?
In my 20s, I frequented bars. Now that I'm in my 30s, that has definitely changed. I rarely drink anymore, and when I do, it's usually at home or a friend's place as opposed to out at a bar or restaurant.

3. What’s missing from your third places these days?
I think third places in general are missing. We need more spaces in cities for people to just hang out. I watched a really good video essay on that recently, about how cities are being developed more and more to discourage people from just... being in them.

4. What kind of third places do you see yourself never frequenting?
See answer #2. I don't see myself frequenting bars anymore, unlike when I was in my 20s. Not because I dislike them, but just because as I've grown older I've felt less need for them. I've become an old person who'd rather do breakfast at a cafe or diner than a late night at a bar.

5. Which third place in a television series would you most enjoy?
Luke's Diner from Gilmore Girls
lethia: (Olivia Dunham)
Friday 5

1. If you are forced to choose only one, what is the greatest single episode of a television series, ever?
The X-Files "Jose Chung's From Outer Space," where everyone is trying to get their story straight about an alien abduction. It's hilarious and kooky and wonderfully paced, and it has this moment.

2. If you are forced to choose only one, what is the greatest opening line of a song, ever?
"Well, they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night" from Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City." It's absurd, it's based on real history, and it sets the tone for the whole song, which is one of the greatest songs ever written.

3. If you are forced to choose only one, what is the greatest movie kiss of all time?
Westley and Buttercup in The Princess Bride, but mainly because of Peter Falk's narration: "Since the invention of the kiss there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind."

4. If you are forced to choose only one, what is the greatest building of all time?
The Space Needle, but I'm a little biased because it's where I got engaged.

5. If you are forced to choose only one, what is the greatest candy — not a candy bar — of all time?
Chocolate-covered pistachios
lethia: (Nijika)
Friday 5

1. What’s a perfectly satisfying libation?
Lemonade from a local farm here

2. For taking to work or school, what’s in your favorite personal sack lunch?
A salad with cheese, avocado, and ranch dressing with some apples and dark-chocolate covered pistachios on the side

3. Do you know a pretty silly limerick?
I had to look up limericks because I don't know any by heart, but I like this one:
There once was a fly on the wall,
I wonder, why didn’t it fall?
Because its feet stuck? Or was it just luck?
Or does gravity miss things so small?

4. What’s a pleasingly scented lotion?
I've been loving Among the Clouds from Bath & Body Works lately. It's fruity but light and smells so good.

5. What are some peppy song lyrics?
The chorus of "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter is pretty peppy. I'll let you look up the lyrics. ;) I'm a fan of that song, but I don't like the rest of the album. It's unfortunately really boring in comparison.
lethia: (Default)
Friday 5:

1. Where do you like to go for al fresco dining?
There's a local pizza and beer place here that has a really good outdoor section.

2. When did you have to go somewhere incognito?
Honestly, I can't remember.

3. Where can you see some interesting graffiti?
There's an alleyway downtown where graffiti artists are given free reign to go all out, and there's always some interesting stuff there. My favorite pieces are a big Dolly Parton portrait and a scene from Super Mario.

4. What are some good Madonna songs?
I'm a really big fan of her ballads. "Live to Tell" and "This Used to Be My Playground" are probably my favorites.

5. Which well-known adage would be a good motto for you in the coming month—or for your lifetime?
"Less is more." I need to get rid of some things and stop being so materialistic.

The Friday Five:

1. Are you happy with your current line of work? What do you like/don't like about it?
I am. It can be stressful sometimes, but that's true of every job, even the fun ones. I like the investigative aspects of it, that sometimes figuring out a claim can be like solving a puzzle. I like the people I work with as well. I don't always like making phone calls, especially if they're to patients, but it's not too bad.

2. Do you see yourself doing the same type of work in 5 years? What about 10?
Yes. I want to stick with my job because it will allow me to pay off my student loans in four years since it's a nonprofit and is considered a public service job. I'd still like to be with it in 10 years as well. I do like my job, and I can see myself growing within it.

3. Did you see yourself doing this type of work 5 years ago? What about 10?
Honestly, yes. I've worked in medical clerical for a while, so it's not surprising that I ended up here.

4. Did you have a dream job as a child? What was it?
I wanted to be a paleontologist and dig up dinosaur bones like Dr. Grant in Jurassic Park.

5. If you had to pick a radically different job from what you have now, regardless of whether you'd realistically be able to do it given your skillset, what would you pick and why?
I'd be a baker. I'd love to own my own bakery or just make pastries all day for a living.
lethia: (Ada Wong)
I'm always late to these anymore, but here's the Friday 5:

1. What movie do you think everyone should see? Everything Everywhere All at Once. I think it's one of the most profound movies that's ever been made.

2. What song describes your overall mood or outlook on life right now? I've been listening to "Nothing to Fear" by Eivør a lot lately, and I've really been feelin' it.

3. What’s the most memorable food you’ve eaten while traveling? Probably the duck I had in France. Nothing else has quite matched up to it.

4. When were you most recently disappointed by the closing of a store or restaurant? My favorite place to go to for curry closed down last year because the owners retired. I'm happy for them, but I miss their yellow curry so much. I haven't found anything that lives up to it yet.

5. How have you been sleeping lately? Really well and too much. I've been taking a lot of naps.
lethia: (Default)
From the Friday 5:

1. What are you 2 lazy 2 do this weekend?
Probably some of the cleaning I need to do around the apartment. We're having a game night with family this Saturday, and then I'll probably spend Sunday with my mom watching the Great British Baking Show. I doubt I'll fill the extra time with cleaning. Save it for next week instead.

2. What was just 2 much this week?
Having to write addresses on all of the folders for claims to be mailed at work yesterday. Hand cramps galore.

3. What took 2 long 2day?
Work. I'm on lunch right now, but the day is going by so slowly.

4. What’s going 2 be much 2 fun 2morrow?
Danny's off work, so we'll probably hang out, maybe watch some more Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

5. In what effort are you 2 legit 2 quit?
My job. I've helped out in extra areas lately to get stuff caught up from the backlog that resulted from the cyberattack.

.....

1. What do you remember about your first camera?
I had a little silver Kodak digital camera. I remember taking it on the high school French trip with me and snapping memories.

2. What do you remember about your first cell phone?
Honestly, not much. It was a flip phone, but I can't remember the brand or anything else about it. I didn't use it nearly as much as I use my Google Pixel 8 now, of course.

3. What do you remember about your first radio?
I had a boombox that I listened to my CDs on in my room. I don't remember the brand or anything much about it either. I just remember chilling to Savage Garden, P!nk, and the Spice Girls.

4. What do you remember about your first countertop kitchen appliance (or device)?
This is hard when you have a bad memory! I honestly don't remember what my first countertop kitchen appliance was. I'll never forget getting our stand mixer last Christmas, though!

5. What do you remember how to do from your first job?
Fold fitted sheets. I worked in the laundry area of a hotel.

.....

1. When are you a shark?
When I'm playing board games or card games

2. When are you a kitten?
When I'm with Danny

3. When are you a chameleon?
Almost all the time. I'm pretty good at adapting to situations.

4. When are you a parrot?
When I watch a Jacob Geller video and can't stop talking about it for days afterward

5. When are you an amoeba?
When I'm lying down in bed?
lethia: (Default)
I've been lax on updating lately, mainly because things have just been so damn busy. I got married on March 22! I'll post more later about the wedding day and stuff, but for now I want to catch up on The Friday Five:

1. What is your native language?
English

2. Do you speak any other languages? Which ones?
I'm very much a beginner at French and Russian. I took four years of French in high school, and I'm surprised at how much I've retained. I studied Russian language and history in college.

3. How difficult is it for you to learn or understand new languages?
I'm actually pretty good at it, I just need to actually take the time to study.

4. If you were going to study a new foreign language, which would you want to learn?
Either Dutch or Spanish. Dutch because my mom's side of the family is very Dutch and it would be nice to connect with that part of myself. Spanish because it would be incredibly useful.

5. How are you at reading subtitles in foreign films?
I'm good at it. I love subtitled movies!

1. Rice or potatoes?
Rice

2. Fish or red meat?
Fish

3. Salad or cooked vegetables?
Cooked veggies

4. Cake or ice cream?
Cake

5. Water, soft drink, wine, beer, or hard alcohol?
Water always wins over everything for me.
lethia: (Scully)
I'm bored today, unsurprisingly. I'm transferring my main blog's domain from Wordpress to Namecheap, and I'm going to change the DNS settings so that it's hosted on Bear Blog. I'm tired of Wordpress, and I keep hearing horrible things about how it wants to sell stuff to AI companies, the CEO is transphobic, etc. I'm not transferring all of my posts over. Instead, I want to have kind of a fresh start. But I might manually transfer a few of my favorites.

Anyway, here are some belated Friday Fives!

The Friday Five:

1. What's a skill you'd like to learn?
I'm hoping to learn to hone my singing voice, so I'm going to be taking voice lessons beginning in May. I'd also love to fully learn the guitar. Anything musical, really.

2. What's a hobby you'd like to try?
I really want to do something like embroidery, crochet, or needle felting. I've started needle felting, but I'm still very much a beginner.

3. What's the best compliment you've ever received?
My boss at work constantly tells me she wants to clone me, which always feels good! Any compliments that I've received in regards to my intelligence and work ethic are always appreciated.

4. What's one way in which you are awesome?
I catch onto things really quickly and love to learn.

5. What's a gift you would like to receive (in case anyone asks)?
Right now, my favorite gift is a Sephora gift card so I can go on a shopping spree at my favorite store!

And Friday 5:

Which five-letter word describes your mood today?
BORED. The system is still down at work, so I don't have much to do. They're anticipating it will be back up next week, though, and that's when things will start to get really hectic. We've already been asked to put in some overtime to catch up, and I might have to go into the physical office for a few days rather than working from home. I dislike all this downtime, but I'm not looking forward to playing catch-up either!

Which five-letter word describes your plans for the weekend?
RELAX. Next week is going to be a busy one for several reasons, including work and our wedding (!!!), so I want to try to get all the relaxation time in that I can this weekend.

Which five-letter word describes something that annoyed you this week?
BOXES. I have a bunch of boxes from stuff I've had shipped here that are just stacked up in my room, and they keep falling over. It's my own fault, though, because I need to just go ahead and take them out of here.

Which five-letter word did you eat this week?
PASTA. I had some creamy tomato penne with chicken from one of my favorite restaurants for dinner last night, and I had enough leftover to have it again for lunch today.

Which five-letter word made you happy this week?
DANNY. Hanging out with him always makes me happy. Last night, we went down a music rabbit hole, sharing some old and new favorite songs with each other.
lethia: (Default)
I definitely didn't feel like writing when I did my Good & Not-So-Good post last night. I'm feeling more up to it today.

The system is still down at work. I'm really not looking forward to next week when it comes back up and I have oodles of work piled up for me to get through. It also means that today is yet another incredibly boring day with lots of downtime. Hence why I'm writing here.

I woke up this morning with a sore throat and feeling very congested. It hasn't been fun, but I don't feel so sick that I can't work, and I still did my skincare routine earlier, albeit a little late. My hair looks amazing today too, very full and wavy, of course on a day when I feel like bleh and I don't need to go anywhere or do anything. Isn't that the way it always goes? I'm really loving this new Redken All Soft shampoo I got, though. It does wonders for my hair.

I picked up Garden Life, and I plan to play it after work while listening to the new Amaranthe album, which was released today. It'll be a good evening.

The Friday Five:

What is the name of...

1. Your favorite book?

The Innkeeper's Song by Peter S. Beagle

2. Your favorite movie?
Klute

3. Your least favorite adaptation of a book to a movie?
The Hobbit films. There shouldn't have been three. They added a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff, and it just didn't reach the level of the LotR adaptations.

4. Your least favorite adaptation ever of anything to a movie?
Probably Avatar: The Last Airbender. I never actually saw the movie, but I heard enough about it to know that I don't want to. Now they've adapted it to a TV show, and I honestly wish they would just leave it alone. The original series is perfect as is. It doesn't need any adaptations.

5. Your first ever novel/comic book/movie character crush?
Howl from Howl's Moving Castle

And Friday 5:

1. What’s the strangest food you’ve eaten out of a can?
Maybe jellied cranberry sauce? I'm honestly not sure what constitutes strange here, or that I've ever eaten anything very strange out of a can.

2. What food most recently made you ill?
I felt awful after eating Chili's a couple of weeks ago.

3. What movie makes you really want to eat?
Ghibli movies. Even though it's animated, the food in those movies always looks so good and makes me want to eat.

4. What haven’t you eaten in a really, really long time?
Curry, and it's one of my favorite foods! I should make some next week.

5. What did you most recently eat in a moving vehicle?
Probably a bacon burrito from Scooter's. I tend to eat those in the car while driving, admittedly.
lethia: (Nijika)
I ended up reading around 50 pages of The Red Tree last night. It's really good! It has this feel to it that I don't get very often in books, this contemplative melancholy feel. There's not a lot of action and there is lots of rumination, but it works. It's also interesting that the main character, Sarah, is pretty unlikable. She's self-absorbed but way too self-deprecating at the same time. The writing just flows and flows, though, and it's intriguing to be inside Sarah's head. I've always kind of liked unlikable characters and unreliable narrators. It's why I'm such a big fan of In the Woods by Tana French and Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers, two of my favorite books.

I had my appointment with my psych yesterday, and she upped the dosage on my Rexulti. She says it sounds like I've been going through a depressive episode, and I agree with her. I haven't been overly depressed, but I've been feeling very flat and listless. Most of the time, I just want to take a nap as opposed to doing anything entertaining or productive. Hopefully the higher dosage will help with this general "meh" feeling.

I found some new icons, and this Nijika one that I'm using is so cute. I miss Bocchi the Rock. Can't wait til the movies come out this year!

Some more old Friday Fives )
lethia: (Default)
The Friday Five:

1. Have you ever been the president of anything? Nope

2. What do you think is the most important leadership trait? The ability to recognize others' accomplishments

3. What time period did you find the most interesting to learn about in history class? Ancient Rome

4. What's something you think about doing, but you haven't gotten back into in several years? Playing the guitar

5. If you could add one more random holiday to February, what would it be? Uhhh...I wouldn't have it off work anyway, so it wouldn't matter. I like February the way it is.

And Friday Five:

1. In the movie of your life, which actor plays your arch nemesis? Hmm... Maybe Christina Ricci just because I like her and she seems like she'd be a cool antagonist. I don't have an arch nemesis, so it doesn't really matter who it is, I'd just want someone cool.

2. What brought on your most recent case of the blues? Being off my meds

3. What was the gateway drug (used figuratively, please!) leading to one of your obsessions or addictions (also used figuratively) today? Symphonic metal leading me to other forms of metal, like progressive metal and death metal

4. In your field of expertise, what is generally considered a cardinal sin? At work, I guess not following up on accounts

5. How many people named Louis (or some variation) do you know? None!
lethia: (Default)
One word to describe the entirety of today: relief.

I finally got my new prescription, and it didn't cost as much as I thought it was going to. In fact, it only cost $15! Such a huge relief!

Then I had a meeting with my supervisor, and she told me that I've decreased our aged accounts by 20%, which is, in her words, phenomenal.

I've been worried about how my mental health has been affecting my work, so to hear that I've made such an accomplishment is just...everything. I love my job, and I want to do well at it. To have it confirmed that I am making tangible strides is the biggest relief.

I'm so lucky to be where I am in life right now. I can't forget that.

Questions from The Friday Five:

1. At what age did you discover you had a favorite color? I don't remember the specific age, but I remember loving green as a kid. Anytime I was asked what my favorite color was, that was my answer. Now, though, my favorite color is periwinkle or gray.

2. What type (genre) of film do you prefer to see in a theater versus one you'd watch at home? I love seeing horror films in the theater. I watch them at home as well, but the audience reactions are always extra fun. That being said, I'm not much of a theatergoer in general these days. I've become too much of a homebody.

3. What's your oldest object or item since childhood? I still have one of my ballet slippers from when I was five. That's the first thing that comes to mind.

4. In what book would you insert yourself as a side character or friend to the protagonist? I would love to just be a hobbit in the Shire in Lord of the Rings. That's the dream, honestly.

5. What's your favorite shape or type of cloud? The whispy ones. Cirrus, I think they're called? They look like dragon's breath.

I decided I want to do last week's as well because it looks fun:

1. Do you cook regularly or does someone else cook for you? I cook maybe once or twice a week. My specialties are soups (particularly Hungarian goulash), spaghetti, and burgers. Most of the time, though, Danny cooks. It's what he does for a living, he's very good at it, and he loves it, so he takes point on the cooking most of the time. I do a lot of baking, making sweet treats and desserts.

2. Which are you better at making: sweet or savory foods? Sweet, for sure. I'm the baker. Danny is the cook.

3. If you had to work as a chef in a restaurant of your choice, which restaurant would best complement your current culinary skills? I'd love to work at a local bakery.

4. What is a cooking tip that you know, but other people generally aren’t aware of? Sugar in spaghetti lowers acidity, and I always dredge blueberries in flour for blueberry muffins because it ensures they don't fall to the bottom.

5. Do you have a recipe you would like to share? I'm going to recommend Preppy Kitchen. I get most of my recipes and cooking tips from there. Also, this cinnamon espresso coffee cake is one of the best things I've ever made.
